My wife and I somehow missed this show and I intend to watch it even though it does sound just like last restaurant standing. Even though I haven't seen it I have loved watching Marco and Gordon Ramsay's shows for a number of years and wanted to clear a few things up.
I just wanted to explain to people who were asking who Marco is that he is one of the most well respected chefs in the world. Pretty much every chef or foodie of any muster will know of him. Just type his name in to Wikipedia. He trained Gordon Ramsay, Heston Blumenthal worked under him (Heston of the Fat duck restaurant in Bray, UK which is a 3 michelin star restaurant and has been rated the best restaurant in the world a number of times) and so did Mario Batali. I mention Batali because he is a chef that I would imagine that most TV audiences in the US would recognize. I am originally from the UK and Ramsay and Marco have made a number of shows there that never made it as far as the US. Marco has been running the UK Hell's Kitchen since Ramsay left the UK and took the format to the US. In the last season of Marco's Hell's Kitchen Mario Batali flew all the way to the UK to appear on the show and talk about the respect he has for Marco. Even Batali rates him as a God.
In terms of Marco's personality he is a typically British eccentric with a bit of French and Italian. In his show about creating his ideal British menu (shown only in the UK) he really shows his passion and eccentricity and he is a far more compelling character than Ramsay. It may take a while to understand Marco but it's worth it. He is a far more contemplative person than Ramsay and his talent is far more organic and less worked at in my view.
Just to summarize Marco Pierre White may not be famous in the US among the populous but neither was Gordon Ramsay at one point. I can tell you that anyone in the US who is really into food knows exactly who Marco is (just as they know who Joel Robuchon is). Anthony Bourdain made a program about Marco which was on the food channel over here and described him as the guy who every chef had a picture of pinned to their wall at some point. He said that he wanted to BE Marco Pierre White. I bet a lot of people in America don't even know who Thomas Keller is and he is the best US chef in this country and I would love to see him do a show (big fan). Just appreciate the opportunity to see a culinary genius at work. He is light years ahead of the Flays, Symons and Collichios of this world.
