Aloha! 'O Kawika ko'u inoa (My name is Kawika). First I would like to say I was raised on the mainland and have only lived on Oahu for 5+ years but like Kala say, its all about the respect! I dont curl waves like these guys but I love to surf (he'enalu) and be one with the ocean... but that is their profession and you jus have to respect the local scene buy giving them their waves! And I know some of the coolest locals that show you nothing but love. Some true Kanaka maoli's! True Aloha! But yea, like anywhere in the world you run into locals that defend their territory from outsiders! No different from Hawaii... you jus have to give respect and earn it back. Respect is earned not given... For me coming from the mainland, I was raised without knowing Aloha but once I set foot on the aina and learned the culture and its people, I was sucked right in! So now I try to learn as much as I can, not to fit in or be fake but to help preserve the culture and its people! And that is how I got my Hawaiian name; by knowing and getting along with real locals who gave it to me... I earned the right to call myself Kawika. Hawaii is an amazing place! The 808 might show the tougher side of Hawaii but these are surfers who risk their lives day in, and day out... they dont put up with nothing. They will kick you in your okole if you over step your bounds. But from what I learned, you jus need to be respectful! This is how it is...Kau hoaaloha,

i agree that every single episode of this show was basically a whole lot of nothing, aside from the awesome surfing footage. but seriously, kala is the BIGGEST donkey to grace this earth, and makua is such a little rat i watched this series purely for the mindless entertainment value, and watching these guys pretty much make asses out of themselves, because its basically them trying to be mokes and show off and act like theyre good guys or whatever. but being from hawaii, i always find it funny when i see shows like this and they try to represent a certain image and how they try to portray themselves to the rest of the world. with hawaii being so isolated in the pacific, the people there really are protective of it and they have this attitude of like, this is our land blah blah. and it shows in the way they act towards "haoles" and stuff. i think itll be a long time before people actually get a really good impression of locals. OH WELL! i jus think its effin hilarious to hear people say brah on television.
