Unseen for over 40 years, THAT SHOW is truly a gem. Taped at what looks to be the smallest studio at 30 Rock, Joan Rivers and her magnificent personality and quick witted responses manage to make this small show a major rival for Johnny Carson (the brightest NBC star at the time).
No scenery, a handful of people for an audience, shaky cameras and canned music, THAT SHOW relies strictly upon Joan Rivers. And she delivers. Young, a new wife and even newer mother, she managed to cross the bounderies. No one, at least not in 1968, said such risque lines.
And why wasn't this show a success? Well, the brains at 30 Rock put it on at the strangest times. In New York, if I recall, it was on at something like 9 a.m. on weekday mornings. Stuck in-between reruns of LOVE THAT BOB and game shows, THAT SHOW was far too sophisticated for the average early morning viewer. Where it would have been a natural lead-in to THE TONIGHT SHOW, instead it was left to fend for itself.
So, thank you HULU for bringing to us what has to be one of the funniest shows ever.
