Expiration
Hulu's goal is to provide as much content as possible and to keep it all on our service permanently. What videos we post and how long we're able to keep them on Hulu depends on streaming clearances granted by our content partners. We work with them constantly to try to secure more, and they've been great about reaching into their vaults on our behalf.
In some cases, an episode or movie may expire from Hulu. Streaming clearances can be limited by any number of legal or business agreements that differ from video to video. An episode or movie may expire due to myriad reasons, including music clearances, impending DVD sales and syndication deals, among others. It's disappointing to us when a video must come down. As videos are the heart of our business, we're always working to continue to expand streaming clearances.
Whenever a video is about to expire, we do our best to provide fair warning to our users. Expiration warnings are posted underneath a video's thumbnail image five days before it is removed from our site. You may also activate expiration warnings for videos in your queue; when turned on, you'll receive an email alert seven days prior to a video's expiration date. You can also find general availability notes on the main page for many shows.
HD Programming
Hulu is committed to leveraging and developing innovative technologies that deliver the best possible online video viewing experience. To that end, the Hulu HD gallery is the first step in making HD-quality videos available on hulu.com. We'll continue to evaluate our video stream sizes against broadband penetration and the internet connection speeds of our users to find the optimal bitrates for our videos.
Closed Captioning
Hulu currently receives closed-captioning data for some of its shows and is committed to expanding our library of closed-captioned content. The closed-captioning data that's used for broadcast TV isn't easily translated for online use, so we're investigating alternative solutions to boost our closed-captioning coverage.
Closed-captioned content is easily identified by the "cc" icon that appears next to a video title. A closed captioning filter is also available on Hulu's Most Popular and Recently Added pages. When available, you can turn on captioning by clicking on the "cc" button that appears to the left of the volume control in the video player window, then selecting a language. A default setting for closed captioning is also available in your Hulu Profile & Settings tab.
For more information about Hulu's closed captioning, please see our Technical Support section.
International
For now, Hulu is a U.S. service only. That said, our intention is to make Hulu's growing content lineup available worldwide. This requires clearing the rights for each show or film in each specific geography and will take time. We're encouraged by how many content providers have already been working along these lines so that their programs can be available over the Internet to a much larger, global audience. The Hulu team is committed to making great programming available across the globe.
