A proxy server works as sort of a middleman between a personal computer and the Internet. In practice, Anonymous Proxies are used to hide information about a person's personal computer so they can browse the web anonymously – and sometimes access a site that is restricted to a certain geography.
Due to contracts with our Content Partners and Advertisers, Hulu is unable to stream videos to users of Anonymous Proxy servers (because of possible geographical limitations). If our system determines that your computer is behind an Anonymous Proxy, you will need to disable it before you can access videos on Hulu again.
Below are a few common scenarios that can lead to you being identified as using an Anonymous Proxy by our site:
Accessing Hulu from outside of the United States
The videos on Hulu are available in the U.S. only. For more information about our international policy, please visit this help article.
Using an unsupported third-party app (or mobile device) to access Hulu
Currently, we are only able to stream videos through our official Hulu Plus app. If you are attempting to watch Hulu through a third-party app, or the browser on an unsupported mobile device, you may receive an Anonymous Proxy error message due to the way they attempt to serve our videos. However, our overall mission at Hulu is to help people find and enjoy the world’s premium content when, where and how they want. That means we’re continually listening to user feedback and are planning to add more popular mobile and streaming devices based on new technologies, user trends and demand. To find out which mobile platforms are currently supported, please visit our Hulu Plus Devices page here.
Using a VPN or other work network to access Hulu
Many companies use Virtual Private Networks (VPNs) to monitor and secure their employees’ Internet traffic. Since they typically route all their Internet traffic through a central server, our system may determine that they are Anonymous Proxies. If you are having trouble accessing Hulu while using your work computer, you may want to contact your company’s Network Administrator for help.
Using a program on your computer to anonymize your web surfing
There are many products available that can secure your online activities by anonymizing and encrypting your web traffic. While great tools, these can sometimes appear to our service to be Anonymous Proxies. You may need to temporarily disable them, or add hulu.com to an exception list to watch content on Hulu as we cannot stream videos to computers whose geographic location is anonymized. The quickest way to find out how to customize these settings would be to contact your vendor directly.
Using an IP address that has been blacklisted because of previous Anonymous Proxy use
Many Internet Service Providers (ISPs) function by randomly assigning their customers Dynamic IP Addresses from a set pool of addresses. For various reasons, they occasionally reassign these addresses from one customer to another. While this does not usually result in any negative consequences, if the first customer to use a particular IP address was blacklisted while running an Anonymous Proxy, it can carry over to the new customer assigned that address.
If you suspect that this is the case for you, the quickest way to clear it up is by contacting your Internet Service Provider and asking them to assign you a new IP address. They are usually pretty quick to assign you a new one if you tell them you think you may be getting blocked because a previous customer was running a proxy server.
