For a smooth playback experience, a broadband internet connection is required. The most common causes for stuttering videos are slow download speed and inconsistent wireless connection. We require a download speed of at least 3 Mbps for High Definition videos and 1 Mbps for Standard Definition videos.
If you are experiencing stuttering or choppy playback, we recommend performing a speed test of your connection. Visit speedtest.net and click on the green Begin Test button. Once the test is complete, compare the results against our requirements.
If your speed test results exceed our requirements, here are some general tips that may help:
- Power down your equipment (Hulu Plus device, modem, and router) for approximately one minute and then power back up.
- If you are watching a video over a wireless connection, connect your device directly to your router via ethernet cable.
- Disconnect any other devices from the network.
- Refer to your router manufacturer for settings and configuration information that can help improve the strength of the network.
If issues persist, additional device-specific troubleshooting suggestions are listed below:
PlayStation 3
The PlayStation has a built-in network speed test and we recommend running the Connection Test. In the main menu (XMB), go to Settings > Network Settings > Internet Connection Test and compare the download and upload speed with the speedtest.net results.
If you continue to experience stuttering playback on your PlayStation 3, try these troubleshooting suggestions:
- Ensure the Video Quality is set to Auto (while a video is playing, press R1 on the controller)
- Reset the system time and date of your PlayStation 3. In the XMB, go to Settings > Date and Time Settings > Date and Time > Set via Internet
- Delete the Hulu Plus application (highlight the application, press the triangle button and select Delete) and then re-download the application from the PlayStation Store
If this did not help, contact us directly and let us know which steps you've already tried. We'll be happy to investigate further.
