Creating an account on Hulu allows users to manage their viewing experience and view all of the content on the site. We offer a variety of personalization settings, enabling you to view content how you want.
To access these settings, you'll need to log in to your account. Once you do, click "Profile" in the top right corner of your browser. You'll see a series of tabs on top of your profile; click on "Privacy and Settings."
The following options will be listed in the left-hand column:
Hulu News
Receive email updates on the latest Hulu news and features.
Subscription Alerts
Receive email alerts when your queue is updated with subscription videos.
Expiration Alerts
Receive email alerts when queued videos are about to expire.
Closed Captioning
Automatically turn on English captions (if available).
Video Settings
Automatically default video playback to the 1 Mbp, 480p stream (selecting "no" defaults your video to the lower-bandwidth, 360p option).
Additionally, you can decide which information from your profile is public or private by adjusting the various drop-downs under "Privacy for My Profile."
Once you are finished adjusting these settings, be sure to click "save."
Account Termination
If you decide, for whatever reason, that you would like to cancel your Hulu account, you can do so by performing the following actions:
Alternatively, once you're logged in, you may click here to go directly to the Delete page. Please note that once this action is performed, it cannot be undone. You can continue to watch most of Hulu's library without an account, but you will be unable to access adult-rated content (such as R-rated movies or TV-MA content), access your queue, or leave comments or reviews.
Age Verification
Occasionally, you may encounter a situation where you're logged in and the site tells you that you are not old enough to watch a particular video. If you are sure that your account lists your age as older than 17, try the following steps:
Closed Captioning
On shows where closed captioning is available, you'll see a "cc" button to the left of the volume control. Click on that and select the appropriate language and closed captions will display.
We also offer a default setting for closed captioning, and it will turn on captioning whenever it's available. To activate this setting, log in and go to the Privacy & Settings tab in your Hulu profile. You'll find a Closed Captioning box on the left. Select "yes" to automatically run closed captioning whenever you play a video that offers this feature.
You can easily find closed captioned videos by browsing our Most Popular and Recently Added lists, both accessible from the Hulu home page. At the bottom of the column on the left side of the page, you'll find a "Special Features" filter; select "Closed Captioning" to display only the videos with captioning. You can also find this filter on our search results pages.
Parental Controls
Users are required to be logged into an account and over the age of 18 in order to view mature content (films rated R, TV-MA shows) on Hulu. Unfortunately, we do not have a setting that allows for more customized parental controls at this time. The best suggestion we can offer is to log out of your Hulu account while watching with younger children; this will block mature content.
Queue Issues
Queues are a great way for Hulu users to place all of the shows they love in one convenient place. Users who want to learn more about using queues should watch the following video:
If you are having trouble viewing your queue, try logging out and then logging back in. If that doesn't work, clear your browser cache and cookies, then try again.
If you aren't receiving subscription or expiration notifications, be sure to check the settings in your profile. You may also want to check your email's Spam/Junk folder to see if the emails are being routed there.
reCaptcha Issues
The "Please check your Verification text" error refers to the reCaptcha section on Hulu's sign up page where you need to type the words displayed in the image.
The words are sometimes difficult to read, so you may want to hit the "refresh" button just to the right of the image until you find an image that you can decipher. Once you've entered the words, you will need to scroll down the page to accept our terms of use, then click on the "join" button.
While you don't need to have a Hulu account to use Hulu, one is required for viewing mature content (such as R-rated movie or TV-MA television shows).
Recommendations
Hulu's Recommendations (beta) engine suggests new videos for you based on other content you've watched while logged into your Hulu account. If you've already seen any of the titles suggested, you can mark that particular video "I've seen this," or, if you're not interested in the video, "Not interested."
You can enjoy most of Hulu's content without signing up for a Hulu account, but we encourage you to sign up to take advantage of the following features of our service:
A Hulu account is also necessary for users to access any content intended for mature audiences.
In order to sign up, you'll need to visit Hulu's signup page. There, you'll need to select a user name and password, and enter some information about yourself (birth date, email address, etc.). Please note that, for now, Hulu is only available in the United States.
In addition, you'll see an image with a pair of scrambled words; you'll need to enter at least one of those words correctly in order to proceed. (This is used to prevent spam.) We know those words are sometimes difficult to decipher, so you can refresh the image by clicking on the top blue "refresh" button just to the right of the image.
When you log in, you can choose the option "Keep me logged in for 30 days." If you do so, Hulu will set a cookie that will automatically log you into your account for a period of 30 days. If you uncheck this option, you will have to log in each time you return to the site. You should uncheck this option if you are using a public computer.
