The premise of the show is rather clever, but it's made a ton of mistakes so far. As I see it, the communication stones make it 'too easy,' so to speak. What's the point of a show revolving around being stranded in a galaxy far far away when you have full communication with earth at your leisure? I just don't feel the stones add enough to the show to be worth it, and seeing all the crying family members adds yet another level of drama where there was already too much.
Second, drama absolutely saturates this show to an incredibly annoying degree. I see Colonel Jack pop into a scene and I think finally, comic relief incoming, but he puts on his best disapproving face and bores me half to tears. Some of the greatest, shows out there thrived on both drama and comedy living together. X-Files' Mulder, Stargate's Richard Dean Anderson (among others), SG-A's Shepherd, Firefly's Mel, etc, etc.
Third, Eli gets all the wrong air time almost every time. The writers seem to think he, the dropout, should be a hard working, charismatic guy that knows everything about the ship, but instead he should be a bumbling idiot that gets a ton of math problems thrown at him to solve. No ancient text, no amazing Carter-like ideas, just awesome math problems and a ton of comic relief.
Lastly, saying, "there will be no more humanoid aliens" was a mistake. Unless "humanoid" is extremely vague, this is the best this show is going to get. There are only so many "get in trouble, find planet with needed resource, get away with resource barely alive" repeats until people start getting bored, and these characters are just too whiny to be put up with for long. I say the writers need to add something truly interesting to the show right-quick, or there will be no second season. Here's hoping.
