20 years ago, we watched subtitles in Anime Clubs because there was no choice. Before Subs we had translated scripts in our laps, that was even worse. Dubbed is better, because non-Japanese speakers can understand what is being said. You don't have to look at tiny letters at the base of the TV, so you can actually enjoy the show. Many anime have subtle plots and jokes, many that one totally missed or is badly timed due to subtitles. I keep hearing people complaining about voice actors, but what is worse, a voice actor that it is bit off or one that is speaking gibberish you can't understand. Hardcore anime fans that like subs do exist and there is much more subtitled anime out there than dubbed. We who want dubbed are luck to have Hulu putting it on so we can actually watch anime without going nuts due to the blasted subtitles. For the vast majority of watchers dubbed is better. If Hulu wants to expand anime into the mainstream, it can't only be in Japanese. I know that subbed has it's place. It is artistic, like an opera in the original Italian, but for most people subtitles are a pain.   See 17 other replies

Are you kidding me? When I started watching anime 20 years ago, we all watched subbed. Reason being, the voice actors in Japan are much more skilled than the voice actors in America. I do not watch dubbed at all, they ruin the whole series, plus the American voice actors have to sync with the animated lips which causes awkward dialogue. If you are a true anime lover, you would appreciate the medium that the art is created on and its intended audience. For instance, I wouldn't expect films like kurosawa's 7 samurai or godard's pierrot le fou to be dubbed, because that would really be disrespectful to the actors who portrayed the characters. Now the reason why your question makes me and other fans ticked off is because your statement: most people want series dubbed, which is totally far from the actual truth. I've never known an anime fan who would want a series dubbed, EVER. So from that conclusion, I would assume you are not a anime fan, so hence I am really ticked off. Making a series into a dubbed, requires time and money. Two of the things, anime fans who do not speak Japanese as their main language absolutely hate, because we do not want to spend an extra dime to watch or wait. So when you post comments on hulu which happens to have anime or any other anime provider sites, and your voice is heard on hulu and hulu maybe actually wants to change it, it is our jobs as fans to ground down this idea to a bloody pulp. And being a language learner I get extremely annoyed when they alter the meaning of a sentence or do whatever fit to get the dubs....
And subs w/ Japanese audio really helps me w/ Japanese.
