I saw this in the theater and would have rated it four stars then. But I have been drawn back to watch it a few more times, and always take away something new. Terrific writing is supported by impeccably professional filmmaking and music. And the movie is cast with some of the finest actors of the day. The dark humor carries a lot of messages; let this one sink in.
I live near where this movie was shot. So, of course, it was fun to visit the wineries that were included in the film. I wish they had a completely different story-line for the Santa Ynez Valley, Solvang area. I like the four main actors in this movie... but, again wish the movie wasn't about some guy cheating on his fiancee. Just saying, wish it was different. It sure did bring visitors here. (Mostly from Los Angeles and Orange counties).
Forgive me if I find this genre of 'slice of life' movies utterly pointless, but I found this movie to be more than just a drab, barely-consious string of thoughts, it was entirely boring! After winning some awards, I decided I should see if it was really as good as they said it was, and after watching it, I lost faith in the sanity of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. Perhaps I'm just old fashioned in the fact that I enjoy a movie that is less about symbolism and character study, and more about a good old problem, rising action, climax, and resolution. I didn't so much HATE it, as I just found it unenjoyable, but I still only give it one star.
...this movie isn't for everyone. The subtle tones of this film are hard to see if you look too closely, but it's easy to lose that meaning if you search for a 'larger picture'. This movie is worth at least two viewings, and is greatly enhanced or diminished based upon the views mood and current state of mind.
I find that wine to be the perfect motif for this film and am surprised there aren't more movies surrounding the subject or utilizing the symbolism. The acting is great and very specific, including Virginia Madsen's. Also Paul Giamatti makes this movie with his great reactions and howling comedy. I am by no means a wine-o, but the interpretations of it conveyed by the characters is utterly fasinating. I found the music great, just barely beneath the surface, and showing up more noticeably in the more important scenes. The only thing I would have changed would have been the whole 'daily reminder' chapters throughout, I felt the pace would not have suffered without it. I recommend this film to intelligent people only.
