The enjoyment of this show solely depends on your taste. I love it and find it hilarious, my favorite anime. Yet friends of mine who have watched it with me, only find it marginally funny.
The show takes on a mix of "The Simpson's" and "South Park." A 5 year old boy with a trashy mouth, yet still generally acts like an immature 5 year old boy. But we also see segments focus on his dysfunctional family: His uncontrollable baby sister. His self-continuous house wife mother, on the verge of middle age. And his over worked father. We see there lives, along with Shin and his friends, who all live in Japan.
The series gets some criticism for its alterations from the original. The film student in me understands this complaint. Fully understand how an anime fan who enjoys the art, would want to see the piece as it was originally intended. But the animation fan in me, someone who does not generally watch anime, LOVES Shin Chan for the way it is. The English re-dub, re-written episodes so there contents is understandable to an american audience.
Because of this, Shin Chan is the ONLY anime I really like and get. I love this show for its changes, and praise Funimation for being one of the only studios to get that. That to make a comedy Anime appeal to the american animation crowd (Those who watch Family Guy, Simpsons, South Park, etc.) You HAVE to do more then just translate it to English. It needs to be re-written for the cultural differences.
