lzdifjzpdo, Christianity isn't based on fear and punishment, Catholicism is. I can understand how you would confuse the two, but the fact that you did shows that your statements are mostly speculation and second-hand knowledge.
To utterly refute the existence of a higher being and adhere to that is religion in itself, where you have faith in your faithlessness. To demand that anyone be bound by a set of preconceived notions (There is a God vs There is no God) smacks of hypocrisy.
Why not accept that gray areas exist and stop demanding that people take sides?
My choices aren't motivated by fear of divine repirsal, or hope of an eternal reward (regardless of who grants them). Yet, I believe in God. I make no claim to one religion or another, because to do so, yet live the life I do, would make me a hypocrite, one who only adheres to tenets of my faith that are convinient to me.
What bothers me most is people, on either "side" of the schism, so fiercely judge, oppose, and criticize each other. I have the right to live how I wish. If you're going to weigh in on how I do it, at least be educated enough on the subject to discuss it.
