Romeo x Juliet

*Possible Spoilers*I am quite familiar with Shakespeare's work and there were tons of allusions to his other stories and plays(almost every time William spoke) in this anime. I thought the visuals were fantastic and the love scenes didn't seem drawn out or overdone. To be honest I became so engrossed with the characters of this anime I liked better then the original. When I was in high school two year's ago I once acted out Romeo's part and I completely disliked him. He was actually just a naive boy who would fall in love with women very easily, in this anime they kept Nativity but also developed both him and Juliet.But anyway, my one complaint is Mercutio and Tybault. Their roles seemed reverse and that annoyed me since Mercutio was my favorite character in the play. Other then that, it flowed very nicely.

This story can only be said to be based loosely off the great play by William Shakespeare, I can not recall Juliet running around disguised as a boy anywhere in the original play, but this is a good fantastic/fantasy retelling of such a story. In all, I enjoyed it immensely, and I would like to see how Gonzo Productions would handle a story like Eragon, with no disrespect to Gonzo, they could hardly do a worse job then the actual film did. All things considered, it is an engaging story that works quite well to tell a tale of two lovers, who are separated by family.

I want to like it so bad but, I'm a Shakespeare fan as well as well as an anime fan. And although I'm glad they attempted to turn Romeo and Juliet into an anime, this failed epically to even remotely meet up to it's titles reputation. There are probably other japanese animations that would pass as RxJ animes better than this one did. Aside from all my disappointment in the series as a successor to Shakespeare, this was a halfway enjoyable show.
