The Robotech 2nd season or 2nd Robotech War with the Masters is a bit darker and more tragic than the first, without giving anything away the humans or the Army of the Southern Cross and the expeditionary forces who have left the earth unprotected face another enemy this time the masters of the previous invaders. A more advanced race with bio technology I think the new Battle Star Galactica was influenced heavily by. I think this element of fighting the masters of their former adversary adds to the epic magnitude of this tale. If you are stuck on immature the current crop of flashy immature anime shows that are about the nerdy boys in love with the magical girl, this series will either not make sense to you or enlighten you. The aesthetic of the mecha in this show is somewhat samurai inspired except the new "big robots" are bulky transforming tanks since this is going to be a ground war not a space war. Dana Sterling is an interesting female protagonist she is not as helpless flimsy and magical as most anime females with overstated breasts and whatnot. Dana has a real inner struggle and the orchestral soundtrack of Ulpio Minucci really underscores her internal battles with her being the first born of a clone and coping with human and alien loss. She is given great inherited talent as being a tactical genius since bother her parents were ace pilots though she still is not free from being "girlish" and flirty and having her heartbroken. To me she is a more real character than most females in science fiction she is neither a tough as nails space warrior like Sigourney Weaver in Aliens nor is she a comsic babe as in lots of other science fiction anime. If you read reviews by people who just claim"it sucks" without any real knowledge or reasoning, trust me they are 15 year old kids who've spent their life watching poor quality anime we've been getting in english since the 1990's. This series was aired as an unrelated show but it really adds a darker dimension when it forshadows the alien race of the third robotech war, the Invid theme music in the ruins where the flower of life flourishes is really eerie and cerebral. This series is a tragedy in the sense of great literature where human loss is focused on despite valiant efforts and heartfelt battles in the end we succumb to the overbearing power of the galactic nature of the cosmos' food chain, in that we realize we are not as strong as our invaders. They are much like us but so much more technologically advanced, ancient and powerful only thing we can do is go out fighting.
