Though I loved them all, "The New Generation" was the "Robotech" chapter that I absolutely adored. The dense story and supercool mecha had my young imagination battling alien crabs and wearing transformable motorcycle armor for years.Sadly, "The New Generation" has not managed to withstand the onslaught of time. What's most fascinating about "The New Generation," is the realization that nothing much actually happens on camera. Much of what I remember so vividly from this final chapter was apparently merely conveyed by the narrator. Of course, J Jay Smith's narration plays a key role in all 3 stories of "Robotech," but the device is used to staggering effect here in this final chapter. And that mecha that left such an impression on me? It's almost never rendered competently. Revisiting the show reveals the animation quality to be terribly disappointing. Often entire episodes were so poorly animated I find myself cringing with embarrassment. Oops.(sigh...)
"The New Generation" has some serious problems. But I'll be honest with you. I still love it. I love it for its wonderful characters, and story, and for how it affected my youth. And I love it for what it accomplished in those days of otherwise asinine cartoon programming.
Even so... you can't go home again. It will live on in my memory, but not in my playlist.
