Description

Prayer beads are the small wooden beads strung on a loop used in Buddhist worship. The number of beads is typically 108, corresponding to the 108 earthly desires or sins that the beads have the power to extinguish. "Prayer Beads" is a series of 9 episodes strung together, with the characters in each episode designing one thread of fate. The protagonists' dreams and fears and feelings about this life are all taken up and spun around to reach a dramatic conclusion. Masahiro Okano, a CGI & SFX director who has joined the James Cameron crew on “Abyss”, creates incredible visuals to bring in the horror.

A good show, very much in the spirit of "The Twilight Zone." (or maybe "Night Gallery" would be a more apt comparison)

Nice production values and the first storyline was very good... Reminded me a bit of "The Grudge" in ways.

Other episodes border on the absurd, but are still pretty engaging. I THINK some of the "oddness" of the storylines may be due to differences in "cultural tastes." I suspect Japanese productions are much more open to exploring bizarre themes in horror.

One of the things I particularly like about the episodes isn't actually the horror.... but that the episodes I've seen also seem to give an interesting look at "everyday life" in Japan.

Good stuff.

It's not great horror, but for 30 minutes its definitely on par with some of the stuff put out in the US, better than some, maybe its the foreign aspect that is cool about it. Even though its in Japan some of the horror you could place just about anywhere, still its inventive and it doesn't take long to build up the creepy. Worth a check if you like horror.
