Easily the best series of 2009 and one of the best series of the last decade. The only reason why most people don't like it is because of the ending, and that probably because they haven't figure it out.
Ending Explained *Spoiler alert*
The biggest clue is actual after the credits, and in this the american version they cut a full 3 seconds from the ending. In the full japaense version, it shows at the very end that the bullet casing is right next to the field of blue flowers, where Eren is. You might have to look it up in google image.
Also notice that during the credits, the flower was missing a peddle which means she ate a peddle, but the flowers are poisonous. That why Eren lied motionless at the end, because she too also died.
So In short they committed dou suicide together. She ate the flower, that why the flower was missing the peddle, and then EREN IS THE ONE THAT SHOOT HIM. That why the bullet casing right next to the bed of blue flowers.
Overall a beautiful and sad ending, a perfect way to end a series with this type of theme.
- pointless,one-dimensional characters that you really cannot feel any sympathy for
- a rehash of other, better, older animes that feature assassins as its leads, with revenge among its main themes. i.e. Noir
- very poorly constructed characters with very unclear, very muddled motivations; i.e. Cal pursues Reiji for the last few episodes of the anime purportedly to wreak vengeance on him for abandoning her, then after a whoever-draws-his-gun-the-fastest showdown that lasted all 2 seconds (it was not even a showdown) confesses that all she wants to do is spend the last few precious seconds of her life in his arms ... i mean, honestly, who wrote this -- a second-grader for her English composition class who tries stretching out a 2-minute idea into a 26-page theme paper?
- why was this even made?!
- would have been forgivable if there were richly executed fight sequences -- but there aren't any!!! some flying leaps out of a theater balcony and train railway shootouts that my 83-year old grandmother and her knitting-circle cronies could have acted out themselves --and provided 40x more entertainment value
- again, why was this even made?!if you got roped into watching this because the animation and premise seems promising, I'd recommend watching Golgo 13 instead if you're itching for "bad-ass assassins" storylines to wash the bad taste out of your mouth.
