New Street Law

What a surprise! It is extraordinary to see such a well-produced show set in Manchester. For example, where in New York State is a program set other than in NYC? Too bad only eight episodes were done, or that eight are available on Hulu. I've seen five so far, and it's welcome relief not to have violence and low-grade sexuality as is the case with all American shows that have similar themes. It's a learning experience to see how British law is practiced: i.e. both sides under one roof. A rich mix of characters and interesting plots are another bonus. The only bad thing for me is that I don't want it to end!!

The New Street Law is presented using the distinctive and various aspects of courtrooms and cases addressed in British. It gives a mainstream view of courtroom drama where most case problems are similar to U.S. However, the strategies of defense are quite unique even the way witnesses are questioned. There are jurors in the courtroom and there were a range of scenes were lawyers cross examine witnesses. The way testimonies and witness examination is done was unusual. However the lawyer can give testimony during the cross examination or during the process of witness questioning without any objection and there is a requirement of two eye witnesses for someone to be accused of a crime. It is quite interesting; I was quite taken by the courtroom attire requirements. I like the fact that at list the courtroom holds a certain level of traditional standard of the old time.

Brits say the same thing about the phrases that Americans use. Also, the phrase is Answer Phone not phone answerer. The phrase phone answerer would sound odd to anyone. I really like this show because it's realistic and true to the lives of barristers or lawyers. They have little to no private lives and are constantly on the go, constantly thinking. I wouldnt want that job but its great that others are willing. There are lots of jokes about lawyers but you have to have some admiration for those who take on this job. You really need a sharp mind, extensive knowledge and recall of the law to pull this occupation off successfully.

I enjoyed the first episode but found the many conclusive statements by the attorneys to be annoying. Otherwise, I think the acting was excellent and the plot good as well. I'll definitely watch more episodes. I really like catching the odd expressions like "phone answerer" for answering machine. It really highlights the complexity of language and the role of culture.
