Jack Webb had it right. When he was making Dragnet, each show had a spirit to it that this show just doesn't capture. Without being preachy, without insulting the intelligence of the audience, each episode of the old Dragnet was a civics lesson.

In a democracy we have laws. If you don't like the laws, get together with your fellow citizens and by your vote change the laws. That's it, the spirit of Dragnet. The old show also had a heart - Friday always showed empathy for the elderly and the down-and-out, as long as they stayed within the boundaries of the law.

The spirit of Dragnet just isn't in this new show. Oh, if only Jack Webb were alive to show them the way!

Cop shows are great, from the original Dragnet, to the Dragnet of the 60's to this new discovery to me. Thanks for making it available. I too am sure that we will get a Dragnet 4, as as a society we are starving for a clean-cut showing of right vs. wrong, good against bad and good always winning and without unnecessary sex or violence. Watch Cops. Compare, these are good, honest shows. Enjoy, safely watch them with your kids.

Cop shows. I like them! If you like cop shows, you should watch it. Then, you can have a lot of fun comparing this series to the original and the next version Dragnet:LA. All are available at hulu. All, of course, are dated by their times. And so is the filmography and storyline. Personally I'm waiting for the inevitable fourth update.

Perhaps the new one coming might be Dragnet: I'm a Cop? Just looking at the police procedures over time and the multiple changes from series to series is fascinating. This series was totally new to me. Never knew it existed. Thanks hulu! I enjoyed it and found myself liking the personalities of the partners. Of course I wanted more. A lot can be done with off duty officers too.

All versions work, but have lost some of the pace of the original. Change is inevitable. Unfortunately developing a large enough audience to keep a franchise filming, isn't inevitable. Thanks to hulu, The New Dragnet isn't a lost series.

Jeff Osterhage stars as Webb's Joe Friday replacement named Vic Daniels, Bernard White co-stars as his partner, Carl Molina.There are lots of LA scenes and many similar storylines. There is more small talk than in the original series, in an attempt to develop the main characters and make them more interesting. The writing there only sort of works. Don Stroud often appears as their Captain.
