I first saw this movie at a very young age
8 or 9
it scared the ___ out of me
I watch it now... and it just messes with my head
the story line is complex, metaphores on top of metaphores on top of hallucinations covered up by imagry special effects and creative camios and dialoge...
but I dont know
you can imagine it making sense...but... you are not sure... Ive read the book and know the writers history
its a tough situation
but will you enjoy it?
I was raised on it... so... probably not
For the right person, this movie is one of the best.
I have loved this movie for years. I think the direction of the acting as one bad review puts it, "can be pinned on Cronenberg," and thank god for that. Cronenberg is one of the better directors..by that I mean real directors, with a particular vision and a well documented career. This movie is not for everyone, but it is stunning. I would suggest watching Videodrome first, and perhaps Scanners, then watch this movie, some knoweledge of Burroughs' work may help...and if that is your scene you will love this movie too. If you are looking for some typical hollywood thrillride, this isn't for you, nor was it designed for you or any other "market". Those who rate this low, while I respect personal opinions, certainly have no aesthetic judgement. This movie certainly is not for Burroughs fans only. It is also for Cronenberg fans, as well as fans of the domain where mind meets creation, where the body is the mind.
While a lot of the choices are right, such as the deadpan approach and a really good cast, too much else is wrong. It never really captured the right trippy flavor, coming across as absurd rather than daring. Part of the problem is the performances, dragged down by glum intellectual pretension (pin the error on Cronenburg's direction, as it applies to every role). The weak special effects are unintentionally comic, especially in scenes meant to be sensual and disturbing. David Lynch might have pulled this off; compare to "Eraserhead." No comparison...
An amazing story/ extremely well written with a strong plot.
To love this movie, you have to be open to the 'drug-induced' storyline. It's a very fun and comical journey through the life of one slightly out-of-it gentleman. The typerwriters absolutely are amazing.
To the other commentator who said this movie is eerie and in poor taste, please go back to your bible-thumping. I presume you are referring to the homosexuality portrayed when you describe it as 'discusting'. Stick to G rated films if you can't deal with content.
This is a cult-classic.
KIKI is dead! No, seriously. I'm not kidding. Heart attack in real life... and if you are like me, you just went OMGWTFEEEP! Life is cruel and so is death.
On the Simpsons they had an episode where Bart and I believe Millhouse skipped school and one thing they did was to go see this movie. When they came out Bart said... "I can think of 2 things wrong with that name." LOL I'm guessing they wanted to see a movie that had nudes eating lunch?
