I hate King of Queens, Everybody loves Raymond, Home Improvement. I could go on and on with the last 15 years of Sitcoms based on the premis of Stupid Husband doing stupid things and trying to keep out of trouble with their smart sexy and Wife.
I love Modern Family because it plays with stereotypes and never falls into the obvious and easy choices. Ed O'neill is the 'grumpy old man' but done with a wisdom and a learned-from-experience kind of street-smarts that I've never before seen in a 30 minute sitcom. All the actors and writers are bringing the same kind of stretch to the characters. This episode in particular seemed to punch holes in the sitcom stereotypes, and I love it.
