"Lou Grant" was a fairly accurate portrayal of life on a major metropolitan newspaper. The newspaper business was slowly transitioning into the computer era; as we saw the Tribune's newsroom go from typewriters which the reporters typed their stories to the use of video display terminals. VDT's of course have been replaced by today's modern computer networks.
Pagination which today is common through the use of programs like Quark Express and Photoshop were in their infancy back when the Lou Grant series aired circa 1977-80. Back then, it was commonplace for the words that would be printed in a newspaper to be cut and pasted onto sheets, and then the sheets were photographed and those images were turned into the plates that were put onto the printing presses.
All of that is done by computer today.
