To start, let me address the name of this film, of which if you understand, you will understand the movie a little more. Koyaanisqasi is the Hopi Native American term for "life out of balance," the general underlying tone set for the film, of which is to make the viewer see how humans no longer see the connection with nature, and our perception of it is just artificial and second hand (of course this is the view from the early 80's, we have managed to raise some awareness now).
This movie was not set to have a plot, all of it is to be interpreted by the viewer, and this is part of its art. This film, is, and should be recognized for the content, and how its put together. Its simply a collaboration of shots, set out to amaze the viewer, and to have them think. Simply think about nature and its direct connection with man.
Don't expect any more from this film, you will not be pleased, and I admit its not for everyone. This film is a work of art... and that is all.

PS: If you did happen to enjoy this film, I do recommend a old film called "All This and World War II" it uses the same effect of great pictures, and the underlying music.
