In The Darkness

Well after 3 weeks, I think I have finally figured it out.

The movie is titled "In the Darkness" because that's how it appears to leave many audience members feeling at the conclusion of the film.

The tag line is "Someone is always watching" because of its heavy promotion as a world premiere on Hulu. It has somehow managed to stay above the 95th percentile in terms of total views, while lingering near the 10th percentile in terms of viewer ratings.

I'm not sure what kind of revenue this earns for the distributor and production companies. I suppose it is a sign that if something looks good enough, people will watch it, even if they don't come out enjoying it at the end.

Maybe this will mean a future of more bad stories with good production values, which seems to be the opposite of what people have come to expect from small-budget independent films. I don't think that would be a totally bad thing, because surely someone will eventually hit the sweet spot in the middle of that spectrum. See 2 other replies

I think that one of the reasons that there are so many views of this particular production is the fact that it was shot on a relatively inexpensive Canon video SLR. That's why I watched it. Plus all of the behind-the-scenes shots.

Granted. The acting was terrible. The writing was awful. It was painful to watch. You see, this film was made by "shooters"...(camera guys) under extreme deadlines....who were determined to "make a film...or die." They had a narrow window to make the film (2 weeks) and when the weather cut that in half...you have to give them credit for barrelling on through and doing the WHOLE FILM IN A WEEK. Not an easy task.

Somehow that translated into NO DIRECTION. Who knows. In the future it may be studied in film school...like "Plan 9 from Outer Space"....but somehow I doubt it.

But, the truth is, this film was about as well done as a lot of fare I see on the Sci-Fi channel on any typical Saturday afternoon...with creatures generated on 3dmax... that look like they were done as a high school project.

But...here's my point. They made a movie. An honest to God...GOOD LOOKING....movie. Which mean....ANYONE CAN DO IT.

This is a time, similar to when the Mac's made it possible for ANYONE to become a publisher. The result was...there was a slew of new publications ....most of them were HORRIBLE.

But, hey, that's the nature of the beast. The people with no talent...either failed miserably over time ...or ended up working for the New York Times. But, this also meant that technology allowed us to take a giant leap FORWARD in democratizing the publishing business..

For me...the success of this film was the fact that it was made at all. Not what was IN the film. Rather, HOW it was created.

IT LOOKED FIRST RATE.

And....frankly my dear....that's my point.

Be of good cheer. With 800 channels and 24 hour in the day to fill....YOUR NEXT FILM could be coming soon... to a screen near you.

P.S. -- If it would be helpful to your egos, go watch another low-budget festival-to-DVD entrant in this genre, "Dark Fields".

Your film is eminently better than the offering of what appears to be a Canadian high school film class! I think that's the only film on Hulu I've actually rated with a single star.

How else are you supposed to develop a tough enough skin to stand up to media scrutiny and tabloid sensationalism later in your careers? If you can't take the hate from us nobodies, at least be glad we're nobodies! See 2 other replies

If someone says something bad or out of line you must remember one thing, it's the internet. What did you honestly expect?

P.S. -- I thought you (and the other actors) looked gorgeous! I don't think I've ever seen such a consistently photogenic cast in a homegrown-type independent production.

I did notice one distracting continuity issue with your makeup (eyebrows looked significantly different to me within a scene). But overall, the "look" of the cast was one of the highlights of the film for me. See 4 other replies
