The Chinese historical dramas are the Asian equivalent of Shakespeare. -- Classic, public domain, and I would be surprised if you couldn't find troupes of amateur players doing bad productions of the stuff in the parks on a Sunday. Add the common device of putting the story in modern times, using the buddhist reincarnation riff, and you've got the basic story-line. And just like adapted Shakespeare, the flavor of the Chinese historical drama comes through loud and clear in a lot of the scenes.
Load it up with thick layers of generic fan-service and you've got 90% of the show.
Most of the remaining 10% consists of passable art, decent character design, and good production values, all spiced with a twist of national pop-culture memes which unfortunately might be missed by western audiences.
