Like some other reviewers have posted, I didn't have a real understanding of Korean culture to start with when I watched this, but I didn't really need it. We are all human and, by being human, there are certain universal truths between cultures that we all understand. I really related to the character Chul-Soo, a guy in his 30's who grows out of a prolonged childhood when he is faced with strong woman who is a lot younger but more mature. I would have liked this series to run a bit longer to tie up some loose ends instead of rushing to cover all its bases in the last episode. But all in all, it was an excellent series.
As a side note:
The MHZ network, which is broadcast over the air as a sub-channel under PBS where I live, has been airing this once a week on Thursday nights without commercials. You may ask why I came to watch it here. Well, I got impatient having to wait 7 days in between each episode. I wanted instant gratification.
Just as a suggestion for Hulu; they may wish to redo the subtitles. MHZ did a excellent job translating this from what I've seen so far in comparison (they are currently on episode 11 as of 08/04/2011). Their subtitle text is a bit larger, matches the dialogue better, and doesn't have grammar and spelling errors. Plus they've provided subtitles for other items such as songs, signs, cellphones, etc. It was nice to know what the lyrics were for the intro and certain background songs before I started watching the rest of the series on Hulu.
Hulu's subtitles look like they were done by an elementary school student from Korea who is just learning English. Plus, I can't adjust the text size on Hulu. So, in order to read the text, I have to sit a few feet away from the 7 ft. image I have coming off my DLP projector. If Hulu could slow down the text to the speed that MHZ has, that would be a drastic improvement. Not all of us can read a 60 character sentence in half a second and pay attention to what's going on. I had to pause and backtrack quite a few times on Hulu.
MHZ network gets 5 stars for excellent subtitles.
Hulu gets 1 star for their subtitles.
