Batai, if the "Kite" your referring to is the character in .hack//sign then I think you're getting some things mixed up. The main character of that series' name was Tsukasa.

The .hack saga can be a pretty tangled web of wildy different characters with similar designs. I think it's pretty true to life since the recycling of character models is pretty common in actual MMORPGs, even those with extensive character customization.

There's many different Dot Hack shows.
There's one where the main character's name is Kite, a "wavemaster"/mage. (Girl playing a boy character)
There's one where the main character's name is Shugo, the "short blue haired boy" and his sister "Rena". Those two characters were based off of the characters from the actual game, Kite and Blackrose.
So this is like.. The 4th season/version of the anime? As far as I know.

the biggest change is that two of the PC's the main characters use are female while the original PC's were male (i.e. the kite and balmung look-alikes)

You did. It was called .hack//Legend of the Twilight Bracelet ((LoTB)). This one ((Quantum)) takes place many years and revisions of [The World] later. And yes, the main character is modeled off the same character that the main character in LoTB is based off of. Kite. In fact, every character in this series is modeled off a known character from the franchise but with extremely different personalities. It's actually pretty nifty.
