What I do enjoy about the anime is the feel of Bushido. I don't, for a second, believe everything is as the anime describes in the conceptualization of the code, after all its a kids anime, but I got to say I feel immersed in the feudal era. I like the irrationality of some of the isolation laws, the inhumane disregard for health or rights in the eyes of rank. Notice there is little joy in the series. Love looses to rank every time. Does that make the anime emotionless? Far from it. The characters, even the temporary ones, have great passions, but the strict codes of rank and bushido scar their actions. Many episodes are political strugles, trying to embarrass an oponnent to get an advantage over them. Monster hunting is the venue of interest for the anime, but in truth, the anime could probably be as good with a different venue like a very strong samurai. It might even be better.
