This movie could not make up its mind as to what it was.It ended up being an uneven mixture of comedy and action.
It is worth watching just for the excellent cast and the period locale.
Read, don't watch the 87th Precinct. The real test of Ed McBain's work is in the writing. The plots are sometimes simple, but the characterizations and writing style are what propels the story.
This story was the first 87th novel I read and I was instantly hooked. But I was disappointed by the way the movie fails to capture the witty and dark McBain style despite the fact that the screenplay was written by Evan Hunter (McBain's real name).
There are a bundle of 87th novels - the publisher's actually recruited Hunter to take the place of Earle Stanley Gardner's Perry Mason series which was ending. Don't buy them new, you can always find them in the used bookstores.
Sadly, there have been several attempts by movies and TV-movies to bring McBain to the screen and they always fall short of actually reading the stories.
This is a story about a Cop, who got his license taken away for drunk driving. Now he patrols the sidwalks day in and day out. When suddenly he meats a cute looking woman who doesnt know english. The best scene is where he is walking down the sidewalk where he arrests a bum for sleeping in a no sleeping zone.
