Flash Gordon predates the superhero genre. This series was obviously Sci-Fi Channel's American answer to the success of the new Doctor Who series. Unfortunately, Flash Gordon, despite its intial camp and seeming simplicity of plot, offers any writing staff a rather complex world to navigate.
The Hawkmen of Flash Gordon (who served as the model for the later D.C. Comics Hawkman), in the new series, become "The Raptors." Ming is no longer a god-like villain, but rather simply a facist dictator. Dale Arden is cast as a reporter, a move which essentially turns her into a Lois Lane type. A number of other changes are made to the series that really don't come off very well. The only alteration I actually enjoyed to a great extent was the transformation of Dr. Zharkov into a brilliant obsessive-compulsive personality.
Personally, I enjoyed the 1980 Flash Gordon feature film much more than I enjoyed this series. It's true; Flash Gordon is intended to be campy and cheesy. That's part of the tradition of the character. I didn't see all the episodes when this program aired, and honestly, I probably wouldn't pay any money to see them. But I would watch them on Hulu.
