Rather than continue to argue with you (i apologize for my tone earlier), i'm just gonna sit back and admire your writing, which I must admit, is fantastic. "Their evil comes home and they pull the trigger at the behest of increasingly younger wives" lol, classic. What can i say? We obviously disagree . I never said the man was a saint. He was a b*stard, pure and simple and anyone who knew him well has stated as much in print. Evil? I'm not sure ... Hitler was evil, Stalin was evil, Hunter was a sadist and a fiend. Still, I just appreciate the man for his art, and yes, it is art. He was a writer, not a politician or a statesmen and I judge him as such because I believe I've no right to judge anyone in the manner in which you do. What I can do is judge his work. Should I let Michael Jackson's perceived obsession with young boys ruin "thriller" or "bad" for me? What about Polanski? Mayhaps I should destroy my copy of Chinatown? I know that isn't your main point, but most of your objections seem to involve morality. You really don't think the man was at least a decent writer? I don't know, you seem pretty smart to me, I find it hard to believe that you can't open up Fear and loathing on the campaign trail, or even the great shark hunt and at least chuckle or admire a clever sentence the way I admired the one you closed your post with. Anyway, enough of my verbose rantings, i'm just trying to get in your head. p.s. im not a "doper". I'm 24 dude, we're called "st*ners" now. It's difficult to respond to a staccato, tiered offense against insight, but I'll try.Ian, your presumption of any "anger", or "hatred" is projection, as you (and Hunter) are the only one verbalizing violent acts. This is a discussion, not a review. Thompson fluctuated within his own views, so finding insight to life from them is wishful thinking. His actions speak louder than his words: He repeatedly, horribly beat his wife and forced her to take huge amounts of drugs. The jerk didn't even wake from his destructive sickness when watching his babies die in front of him, his wife leave him in extreme fear, or subsequent world reality repeatedly showing him wrong. His only redeeming value is within his insight that he, himself should have been imprisoned.Will, your following my poignant views on Hulu and periodically posting "pri*k" cannot be seen as a "prevailing" view. Such certainly didn't affect Thompson, so explain why it should affect me. As to "pleasure", certainly, and more.Gentry, I may have met Hunter. He sat waiting in a hippie commune for LSD to kick in on several young women and then sexually assaulted them. No one knew who he was. Apparently, he'd refuel for more assaults by cowtowing with the ruined likes of Kesey and the Manson Family. "Caligula" was his favorite movie and the only way he could get it up. Vidal molesting the rearmosts of a thousand victims didn't sway Hunter! While encouraged by other dopers to validate their depraved experience and influence, his "Gonzo" journalism did nothing but display his madness. That's not even Art. Wolfe called him a joke. There's an argument as to whether he, or another sicko (Vonnegut) first, further destroyed America by hallucinating visions of Americans attacking Americans. It's now obvious the drugged extremities of these men of "purpose" are simply projections of their own cowardice and demonic natures. Miyamoto, what do YOU know about the American Dream? Obviously nothing. Hunter S. Thompson was a kind and generous man. If you've ever read about him personally, he lived a very hard life and forged a legacy from being middle to lower class in Louisville, Kentucky. The man was a patriot who challenged ideals that no one else did, he was revolutionary for his time and his words still echo with purpose now. By god, I wish he was around today. I'd love to see where you got your facts, particularly that last one about murdering unborn children. Yeah.. yeah, I think.. I think I missed that one.
