The best episodes of The Twilight Zone and Star Trek could get fairly deep; though it was hit-or-miss. Babylon 5 was often quite deep. The first season-and-a-half of Andromeda, when Robert Hewitt Wolfe was running the show, was brilliantly deep. (And, as far as I'm concerned, Andromeda ended when Wolfe got canned. The post-Wolfe episodes gave new meaning to the word "shallow".) Of course, Joss Whedon's work (Buffy, Angel, Firefly, Dr. Horrible) has always had a lot of depth to it. Perhaps the deepest show on television prior to Dollhouse was Battlestar Galactica (the reboot series on Sci-Fi). Outside of science fiction, House, M.D. is pretty deep, especially when dealing with issues of medical ethics. But the deepest show on television right now has to be Dollhouse. It raises some really difficult questions in the fields of moral and political philosophy, as well as in the philosophy of mind. With the exception of a handful of episodes of Star Trek , there haven't been a lot of TV shows over the years that have really delved much into the philosophy of mind, which asks questions like: What is a mind? What is consciousness? What is a person? What is identity? What makes you uniquely you? If someone else were given all of your memories, would that person become you? If all of your memories were recorded just before you died, and were downloaded into a new body, would that be you brought back from the dead? No other show on television even comes close to addressing these sorts of questions.Is Dollhouse "deep"? Most definitely, yes. Does it go over a lot of people's heads? Almost certainly. Do they realize that it goes over their heads? Probably not. Would they admit it if they did? Not very likely. Am I going to miss Dollhouse? Without a doubt. Is this post too long? You bet it is. In order to fully "get" a show like Dollhouse, you can't just focus on what is in right in front of your eyes. You must look deeper. You must look at what's underneath the surface. You've got to "read between the lines". It's all about subtext. (Joss Whedon is the absolute master of subtext. He does subtext better than any other writer in Hollywood.) And subtext can be multi-layered. Take Buffy for example. On the surface it was a show about a girl who fights vampires. But if you look beneath the surface it was really a show about growing up, about coping with all the stuff that life throws at you, about responsibility, about the choices we make and the consequences of those choices, about empowerment, about family, about friendship, about relationships, about life. Firefly was ostensibly a show about space cowboys; but it was really a show about freedom, about honor, about loyalty, about faith, about family. Dollhouse is ostensibly about programmable prostitutes; but it's really about individuality, freedom, empowerment, the evils of exploitation, the dangers inherent in efforts to manipulate how people think and behave, and the difficulties of making sound moral judgments in a world where there is no "black and white", only "shades of gray". When we say that a show like Dollhouse is "deep" we don't just mean that it provides us with intriguing mysteries to solve, and always keeps us guessing. That's fun; but it's not particularly "deep". A show is "deep" if it raises important philosophical or ethical questions that have no easy answers, and invites the audience to think seriously about, and even to wrestle with, those questions, allowing us to draw our own conclusions, without trying to force a particular viewpoint down our throats, but constantly reminding us that there are other viewpoints besides our own. Very few TV shows do that. Most of the ones that do are science fiction shows. (continued)   See 4 other replies

Indeed. Syfy is hurting pretty bad now that their crowning jewel (Battlestar) is gone. That show single-handedly gave them any credibility they had for the past few years. God knows original movies like "Pterodactyl: Eater of Men!" sure didn't help their stature.   See 34 other replies
