Description

Joss Whedon, creator of groundbreaking cult favorites "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Firefly," returns to television and reunites with fellow "Buffy" alumna Eliza Dushku for a thrilling new drama, Dollhouse. Echo (Dushku) is an "Active," a member of a highly illegal and underground group who have had their personalities wiped clean so they can be imprinted with any number of new personas. Confined to a secret facility known as the "Dollhouse," Echo and the other Actives, including Sierra and Victor, carry out engagements assigned by Adelle, one of the Dollhouse leaders. The engagements cater to the wealthy, powerful and connected, and require the Actives to immerse themselves in all manner of scenarios - romantic, criminal, uplifting, dangerous, comical and the occasional "pro bono" good deed. After each scenario, Echo, always under the watchful eye of her handler Boyd, returns to the mysterious Dollhouse where her thoughts, feelings and experiences are erased by Topher, the Dollhouse's genius programmer.

I have to agree that Echo was a pretty irritating character, and a lot of the filler episodes in the first season could've been skipped too. Better to have a short show that sticks to the story than some 20 season history of every tangent their lives take, although every show seems guilty of that to some degree. I just overlooked it in this for the overall direction which I felt was starting to get really cool. I also have to wonder how many people actually saw the "secret" episode 13...pretty dumb of them not to air it I think. I had to go dig around for some place to download it. See 31 other replies

Firefly was no 10, no matter how fun people thought it was. 10 means absolute perfection and there's just no way Firefly came close to that, even if it was fun and enjoyable.

And I agree, who cares about her new personas. And actually, her original personality was probably the most irritating and unwatchable of any of them. Not many people are going to root for hyper-liberal, eco-terrorist, "all animals deserve freedom!" nut-job. That's just not an appealing person in most people's minds. See 31 other replies

The show deserved to be cancelled.

Whenever Echo got imprinted I got the urge to yell at my TV, "Why the hell do I care about her next assignment!?!?!" The stories were never that interesting and made less so by the fact that we knew that 95% of the introduced characters would never again be seen on the show.

Yeah shows like "Dollhouse" and "Studio 60," the latter moreso, kill me because they put themselves on this intellectual pedestal, then when no one watches, people claim it's because audiences are too stupid/shallow/mindless.

The reality is, the shows just aren't that good. There have been and are several successful "smart" shows that actually succeed at creating dynamic characters and telling captivating stories. Aaron Sorkin and the most rabid of the Whedonites need to face facts.

I've watched Dollhouse from the beginning and have stuck by it, awaiting either its marked improvement or its deserved cancellation.

There's no way NBC will pick this up. They discarded the excellent "Southland" for being too dark for 9pm (since Leno's got all the 10pm slots), so I doubt they'll pick up another dark show with fewer viewers and less critical acclaim. They should try SyFy... See 31 other replies

I see what you are saying (and I agree...most people have horrible taste in entertainment based more on turning your brain OFF than turning it on), but just because people watch garbage, that doesn't mean, by default, that this show was good. Granted, it's more thought-provoking than a reality show (and even some other network dramas). But when you line it up against shows like Battlestar Galactica, Sons of Anarchy (along with most other FX dramas), and HBO mini series like Band of Brothers, it's just not that good, not even by a long shot.

Though really, maybe they should just sell the show to NBC. Fox's trash could be NBC's treasure since they are in the toilet. See 31 other replies

I would agree if they didn't do the same low promoting last season once it air and the ads promoting the show before the premiere were obscure and no one understood what the purpose of the show was. Fox sucks at advertising See 12 other replies
