The reason for the adoption of Silverlight by other sites is due to Microsoft being in bed with the MPAA, RIAA, and their being staunch supporters of the DMCA. Microsoft wants to limit use to only operating systems Bill Gates and they as a company have a stake in. The only two OS's that is the case with, are Mac OSX and Windows.
Consumers need to say wait one minute and stand up for their rights, like fair use, which we lost supposedly because the DMCA says so. Case law though, for nearly 200 years prior to the DMCA says we do have a right to fair use. Instead of complaining online, contact your congressmen and file a formal complaint like I have. File complaints with the FCC like I have with my cable company violating my rights on this note.
Don't frequent sites who use technologies like Silverlight. Complain to Microsoft that they are purposely taking action to keep a monopoly. Make the same complaint to your congressman and the Attorney General's office for the US and your state. What Silverlight is, is an attempt to perform "legal" acts that would be considered anti-trust under the guise of software to get around the anti-trust laws.
We all sit here and go whoa is me, this isn't right, yet most don't want or care to take the steps necessary to ensure they are heard and don't have their rights under the law violated.
