I'll admit that there's nothing really new about Darker than Black that isn't in a few dozen other animes out there. There's equally clean animation in other animes; the music is similar in other series; the plot (*SPOILER*) to stop the destruction of those who are different (*END SPOILER*) is nothing new; the theme of examining what it is to be human (or, rather, inhuman) has been played before; and the tortured main character has become sickeningly cliche. In fact, if you describe this series without using specifics, I'd personally have a hard time guessing whether it was Darker than Black or the Ghost in the Shell series (yah, they're different in many ways, but take out the specifics and they're oddly similar... think about it). I think, though, that the reason this is a favorite of so many is that everything it does, each overused element, all of it is done the way it should be done. Nothing new is done here, it's just done right.
