For those of you who aren't old enough to remember television before the late 1990s or so, I should point out that many TV shows back then were VERY cheesy by today's standards. That's not to say that they were bad. In spite of the cheese factor, lots of shows back then were really fun to watch. But, in order to enjoy them, you've got to have a high level of tolerance for cheese. When judging shows of that era, you must make allowances for cheesiness. So, let's get this out of the way from the very start: Like many shows of its time, the 1991 revival of Dark Shadows was extremely cheesy and melodramatic. But it was still a great show. I loved it back then; and I'm glad that I got a chance to rewatch it on Hulu. It's not quite the same as the original Dark Shadows soap opera from the late 1960s; but it was a good effort to update the series for a new era, and bring it into primetime. The only real shortcoming of the series was that it only survived for 12 episodes before being cancelled. Nonetheless, they manage to tell a pretty good story over the course of those 12 episodes. So, if you aren't averse to lots of cheese, it's definitely worth watching.
