Is anyone else struck by how little charm this season’s celebrities displayed? Not too long ago, personal allure was a key part of a star’s job description, as important as beauty or talent. We indulged their egos because we understood: when you can charm millions with a blown kiss or a daring ad lib, it’s hard not to fall in love with yourself. Take away the charm, though, and all that’s left is vulgar narcissism.
It seemed to be everywhere. I won’t revisit the obvious candidates, as this forum has already done a bang-up job, but look at the bit players. Example: Tom Greene striving to be class clown. That he is not funny is a talent issue; that he is a hypocrite and a boor is a charm issue. He interrupts everyone, but interrupt him, and you’re attacking Creativity Itself.
Instances of charm were so few that they became disproportionately precious. Ivanka, rocking a Grace Kelly-style regal warmth. Herschel, whose dignity elevated everyone around him, even the cretins. Of the final five, only Brande seemed to make the occasional effort. Charm has nearly infinite forms, of course, from the inscrutable machismo of Clint Eastwood to the fragile grace of Lady Day. So maybe I’m missing something. Thoughts? (For those of you still reading, that is.)
