Blue Gender is by far my favorite anime! This is not to say that Blue Gender compares in quality to animes such as Cowboy Bebop (as one reviewer noted), for it doesn't. But Blue Gender has a redeeming quality to it. Here is what I loved about Blue Gender, and what has made me such a hardcore fan:
1.) The premise is exceptional, especially for those into science fiction! Basically, giant bugs have taken over the Earth, and the few remaining humans who have fled to outer space attempt to wrest back control of the planet, though the story focuses around two central characters (Marlene and Yuji) and chronicles their journey throughout all of this.
2.) The soundtrack complements the scenes perfectly, giving the show that eery feel which such subject matter rightfully deserves!
3.) Blue Gender highly succeeds in creating that perfect fictional world which draws you right in! The action sequences, Yuji's shock at waking up in an alien world, and the chemistry and developing relationship between Yuji and Marlene help make the show emotionally gripping, giving one the sense that they're invested in the story. Throw in the ever present danger of being attacked by the Blue (as the giant bugs are called) and you've got a winner!
And, of course, there is no such thing as a perfect show. So Blue Gender naturally has some drawbacks, though in my personal opinion these are minor:
1.) The ending feels a bit rushed and haphazardly slapped together. My problem here is not with the "humans trying to wrest control of the planet back from the giant bugs" plot line, which was in fact carried out to a successful and satisfying conclusion. It is with certain events occurring on Second Earth where the show drops the ball.
2.) Blue Gender was produced in 1999, so the anime may seem a bit outdated and not up to par. While this is a valid concern for some, I believe that in fact the animation is more than effective. It has a gritty feel to it, which plays nicely into the post-apocalyptic feeling of the show and complements the premise and the soundtrack much more than a polished, perfectly animated show would have.
In conclusion, the key question would be: Is this anime worth investing the time into? My answer would have to be an unhesitating and resounding YES! Watch it and you won't regret it!
