Despite the massive flaws in this show, it's still pretty darn great, mostly because of Gary Cole. He's just awesome as this devil/fallen angel who has this strangely paternalistic role of being the evil creepy sheriff controlling a small town.
Unfortunately, the show only had one season, and there are about four seasons' worth of storyline here, which unfortunately makes for a choppy, disjointed show at times.
It doesn't help that the directors paid absolutely no attention to continuity - in the span of one season we had two different priests at two different churches, two doctors, and what seemed like two different women running the boarding house (a blonde and a black woman, and the blonde was running it in between the episodes with the black woman.) Major characters disappear for an episode or two or three, only to show back up without so much as a "never you mind."
The writing is also uneven. Some episodes are absolutely brilliant, and some descend into total cheese. But even some of the less fantastic episodes have their good parts - and they are all still very entertaining if just for Gary Cole. He does such a great job as the evil sheriff that you end up rooting for him in the end.
Despite the flaws and missteps, and some dated CGI, this is still a terrific, compelling show that brings up some interesting questions about good and evil.
PS Hulu says the episodes are expiring - I hope that's not permanent - this is really something that should be kept up for fans and new fans alike.
